Fiji, home to some of the happiest and friendliest people on Earth, is a popular destination for Canadian travellers.
The white sand beaches, clear ocean waters, coconut filled palm trees and private islands attract those wanting adventure and those looking to simply relax. A destination reliant on tourism, Fiji has plenty to offer to keep you coming back.
As an island nation, Fiji’s closest neighbours are Vanuatu, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Tonga. The International Date Line is meant to run through the Fijian island of Taveuni but was adjusted so that the small island didn’t have two different time zones. It’s now set at 12 hours ahead of Universal Coordinated Time (UTC+12).
April to October is the best as the heat and humidity isn’t at its highest and the rain tends to stay away. It is also said that the water temperature is at its best during these months.
Like most tropical locations Fiji has 2 seasons, dry and wet.
Getting around Fiji is cheap and easy, with buses and carriers (trucks/ vans) on the islands and ferries to transport you from island to island. The bigger islands also have taxis available however you will need to negotiate your fare before the trip as most don’t use meters.
National icons are the Tagimaucia (flower), the outrigger canoe and coconut palm.
