Top U.S. Travel destinations for Canadians

The United States is by far the most popular international tourist destination for Canadians, who provide the second largest source of tourists to the United States, followed by Mexico. In 2019, more than 20.7 million Canadians visited their neighbour to the south. Here’s a list of some of the top vacation destinations in the U.S. that includes bustling cities, sandy beaches, and beautiful national parks.

This Sunshine State theme park is the largest in the world, and the most popular destination for Canadians travelling to the U.S. An ideal spot for your next family vacation, for decades, Disney World has been a window into a world only seen on screens. Watch your child’s face light up as their favourite Disney princess greets them with a warm smile and wave in real time. The park is well worth the trip for adults, too. Take a stroll along Disney's Boardwalk Resort along Cresent Lake for food, shopping and nightlife. And Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach waterparks are bit of paradise for the whole family.
Tropical havens for Canadians fleeing colder climes, the Hawiian Islands offer some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. Hawaii receives nearly 10 million total visitors annually, and many of them flock to the capital, Honolulu. The city’s bustling Waikiki neighborhood is filled with luxury high rises, shops and cafes bordering white sand beaches. Visit Kaanapali Beach in Maui, where some of the most luxurious resorts in the U.S. line its clear waters. Of course, there’s the famed Hawaiian volcanoes. Haiwaii Volcanoes National Park is the site of two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.
A chasm larger than the U.S. state of Rhode Island, the Grand Canyon is a worthy item on any traveller’s bucket list. You’ll be awestruck by the beauty of the formation, which the Hopi Tribe traditionally reveres are the gateway to the afterlife. For an experience that goes beyond parking the car for a photo op, book a guided hiking and outdoor photography tour with the Field Institute, part of Grand Canyon Conservancy. Take a guided mule trip along the canyon’s South Rim with Xanterra. Or hop on two wheels for tours led by Bright Angel Bicycles. All guiding organizations listed are endorsed by the U.S. National Parks Service.
Go see The Big Apple! You’ll experience some of the world’s best art, food, and shopping, in one of the world’s best cities. If you’re a first-time visitor, be sure to take a selfie at the Empire State Building, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty, just to say you did it. If you love art, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, aka The Met, which requests a suggested donation for entry. The museum’s reconstructed remains of the ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur, are a marvel of stone masonry well worth the trip.
With lands in three states, the 3,500 square-foot wilderness area offers amazing opportunities to view wildlife in an intact ecosystem, and periodic, stunning eruptions of geysers. Yellowstone was established as the nation’s first national park in 1872, but it has a rich native-American tribal history that spans more than 11,000 years. Check out the National Parks Service for information on tours, recreation and camping opportunities.
Of course, Vegas is known for its fast nightlife, bright strip and opulent casinos. See the Fountains of Bellagio, a dancing water fountain synchronized to music, soaring over an 8.5 man-made lake in front of the Bellagio Resort & Casino. Take in a concert at the House of Blues Las Vegas to hear some of the genre’s greats. If the natural world is calling, visit Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area, known for its incredible red rock formations, located 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.
Vibrant and architecturally interesting, the food and aesthetics of many quarters in the city have a Cuban cultural influence. Take a walking tour through the Art Deco District in Miami Beach to see striking buildings that exude the line and sophistication of 1920s and 1930s edifices. The district has been listed on the national register of historic places since 1979. Wade in pristine surf at Crandon Park Beach, known to have some of the clearest waters in Miami, thanks to a ban on floatation devices and an offshore sandbar. If you want a more lively, modern and metropolitan atmosphere, visit South Beach.
The second-largest city in the U.S. is known for glitz and glam, but L.A. is more than show business. Stroll through the gardens at The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens; the most lush and gorgeous, landscaped space in the city. Take a hike in the 4,000-plus acre Griffith Park in the middle of the city. The park’s canyons and brush-covered hills are a beautiful contrast to the surrounding city views. Visit the Academy Museum to learn the history of filmmaking in the U.S.
This city is the seat of the nation’s government, but did you know that it hosts incredible sporting events? See America’s favourite past time in action at a Washington Nationals Baseball Game at the Nationals Park. After the game, head to Bluejacket Brewery, or satisfy your sweet tooth at Ice Cream Jubilee. Walk the National Mall to see the most revered and inspiring monuments to U.S. history. Visit the Smithsonian Institution – the world’s largest museum and education complex – for free.
Ride a cable car and gaze at the Golden Gate Bridge. Visit the famed Alcatraz Island for an eerie ghost tour of the former prison after nightfall. Watch a plethora of barking sea lions frolic at PIER 39, where abundant fish and squid has attracted groups of the species males for decades. These happy guys have a dedicated live cam.  Visit Chinatown, an amazing cultural center that is the oldest enclave of Chinese immigrants outside of Asia. While you’re there, be sure to stop by Good Mong Kok Bakery for a sweet bite.
